What We're All About

You’re not just buying coffee. You’re giving hope.

Believe it or not, Seriously Good Coffee exists entirely for one reason – to provide funding to a small, family-run home for abandoned children in Costa Rica. Selling great coffee is simply the way we do this.

The home, known as Hogar Metodista, was founded in 2006 by Ray and Lidia Zirkel. Backed entirely by donor support, the Zirkel’s provide education, housing, clothing, medical care, support and love for children who have been orphaned, abandoned or rescued from dire circumstances.

Hogar Metodista literally transforms the lives of these children, taking them away from danger, desperation and poverty and preparing them for a life of hope and opportunity. With more resources, the home can care for more children. That’s where coffee comes in.

An idea that brewed in the heart of coffee country.

Inspired by the passionate coffee culture of Costa Rica, David and Deborah Michel started Seriously Good Coffee in 2018, after a chance encounter with the proprietors of a family-run coffee plantation not far from Hogar Metodista. Some of the premium beans in our coffee line still come directly from this plantation.

The Michel’s, who are longtime supporters of Hogar Metodista, resolved to commit every penny of net proceeds to the home. This means that after deducting the cost of acquiring, shipping, roasting and fulfilling the coffee, all sales proceeds go directly to the home.

No fine print. No gimmicks. This is 100% about helping children. And you’re doing it, with every bag of seriously good coffee that you purchase.

MADE FROM THE BEST BEANS ON EARTH

Each of our roasts are made from hand-picked, premium coffee beans that come from Costa Rica, Colombia, Central and South American – countries whose elevations and fertile soils produce some of the finest coffee in the world.

Our coffee is roasted and fulfilled in Seattle, WA. To keep our fulfillment costs low, we sell our coffee exclusively through Amazon. This means you can have fresh, delicious Seriously Good Coffee delivered right to your home or office anytime you desire. Even better – subscribe and have it auto-delivered. After all, running out of coffee is a serious problem.

RAY & LIDIA ZIRKEL

The Zirkels are American missionaries who have served in Costa Rica since the mid 1990’s. They were inspired to start Hogar Metodista after witnessing conditions in state run orphanages brought about by severe overcrowding and a lack of adequate resources. They have since dedicated their lives to serving children who come from the most urgent and dire circumstances.

Since the home’s initial construction in 2006, the Zirkels have steadily and dutifully used the generous support of donors and volunteers to grow and improve Hogar Metodista, brick by brick. They remain dedicated to using the proceeds of Seriously Good Coffee sales to expand their capabilities and care for more children.

Costa Rica is a country rich in culture and natural beauty. Yet like many Central American countries, Costa Rica is dealing with the effects of mass poverty among its citizens. It is estimated that close to 20% of the population of Costa Rica—more than 1.1 million people—live in poverty. The number of poor continues to increase as migrants from neighboring countries flee government instability and in many cases, even worse conditions. All of this has put great strain on Costa Rica’s social services.

Amidst these conditions, many children are abandoned, neglected, abused or forced to care for themselves and/or siblings. The Costa Rican government is vigilant in rescuing these children and placing them with the Hogar Metodista where each child receives specialized care in a safe and loving environment.

When you purchase Seriously Good Coffee, you’re doing serious good.

It’s a catchy slogan, but it’s also very true. You’re getting exceptional coffee, and your purchase provides housing, food, education, medical care and so much more to some exceptional children. Just think—for every 4,500 bags of coffee we sell, Hogar Metodista can fully support one child for a full year. So drink up, and tell your friends!
